What is Decolonial Healing?

Decolonial healing is a sacred journey back to your truest self, your lineage, and the Earth. It's a continuous process of working with the fragmentation, disconnection, and colonial impositions—such as the pressure for perfection or constant control—that keep us from our wholeness. This path invites you to reclaim your authentic voice and expression, moving from isolated individuality toward deep connection with your community, elders, and the wisdom of the land. At its heart, decolonial healing is a profound return to harmony with all of life, guiding you to simply be in sacred flow.

Our approach recognizes that returning to self, land, and lineage naturally happens during the healing journey, guided by your own innate wisdom. We honor healing as a profound form of resistance and remembrance—reclaiming tradition, nurturing daily ritual, and uplifting Black and Indigenous futures. Healing is not a luxury; it's a sacred remembering and return.

At Sankofa Rising, we believe healing is a reclamation—of memory, of rhythm, of self, of ancestors, of community, of land. We understand that healing is not linear; it's a circular process of returning over and over again.

This work is deeply guided by the principle of Sankofa (pronounced SAHN-koh-fah) —a word in the Twi language of Ghana meaning "to retrieve" (literally "go back and get"; san - to return; ko - to go; fa - to fetch, to seek and take). Represented by a bird with its head turned backwards while its feet face forward, carrying a precious egg in its mouth, Sankofa is often associated with the proverb, "Se wo were fi na wosankofa a yenkyi," which translates as: "It is not wrong to go back for that which you have forgotten.” This embodies Sankofa's essence: the act of going back and getting what was lost in order to move forward with integrity and wholeness.

We draw from two sacred wells:

🖤The wisdom of our spiritual, land, and blood ancestors—carried through story, ritual, and community.

🌿The wisdom of the Earth—carried through plants, elements, and the body’s relationship to nature.

Whether you are navigating grief, anxiety, ancestral disconnection, land disconnection, or simply yearning for more rootedness, you are welcome here.
